THERE ARE THREE BASIC TYPES OF TEMPORARIES

I. Emergency Temporary ('filling')

The goal of this type Temporary is to provide a measure of protection to the teeth by filling in or coating the exposed area. The result is usually a more comfortable tooth.

This temporary is usually fragile and must be protected by avoiding chewing, flossing and hard brushing in that area.

II. Restoration Temporary ('inlay, crown')

The goal of this type of temporary is to protect the teeth from the environment of the mouth, to stabilize the occlusion and positions of the teeth, and to allow some soft chewing. Eating hard foods such as: chips, nuts, sticky foods (gum, caramel, etc.) and tough bread, etc. is asking for premature failure of the temporary.

III. Bacterial Reduction Temporaries ('fillings, crowns')

The goal of this type of Temporary is to clean out cavities and remove the breeding ground for bacteria that produces acid. It is important to do this quickly and then return and restore the tooth with a definite restoration later. This technique will reduce the bacterial count and the chances of recurrent caries. In other words, the restorations will last longer.
